One approaches the 19th century, September House along a tree-lined private road. The house is covered in virginia creeper, fresh green in spring and summer and a rich red in autumn. The owners, John and Jan Mullin, are ceramic artists and have their studio and small gallery near to the house.
The house is comfortably furnished in a light “country living” style and with an artist’s attention to detail.
There are three double bedrooms available including one with a white and pink colour scheme, which has ivory painted furniture, including a four poster double bed.
The second room has a double bed, painted furniture and beautiful lilac-sprigged curtains. The third double bedded room has mahogany furniture and pale blue and white toile de jouy fabrics. All sheets and duvet covers are pure cotton.
There are two bath/ shower rooms which can be private, or shared depending on availability.
Breakfast is served in the sitting room which is a large light room with comfortable cream sofas and is a wonderful place in which to relax.
Guests love a full English breakfast including local farm bacon, free range eggs and the Mullin’s home made bread. Lighter options such as cereals, fruits, nuts and yogurts are also available.
The large garden is a delightful place to rest after a busy day at the beach or exploring Devon and Cornwall. John confesses to being a “plantaholic” and has many unusual varieties of plants in the mature garden surrounded by old trees.
Although in Devon, September House is only a couple of miles from Cornwall and a 12 minute drive from the famous surfing beaches of Bude, (where equipment can be hired.) The nearby National Trust owned Sandymouth is particularly recommended for its outstanding geology and intriguing rock pools. The coastal path walks offer spectacular views.
